( Publishers Weekly starred review) THE RACONTEUR'S COMMONPLACE BOOK tells of 12 travelers stuck at an inn waiting for the rain to stop and for the flooding Skidwrack River to go back down into its banks. ![]() But they have only their stories, and one another, to save them. What kept me immersed in the story though was the unique set of rules that each side had in place. Skye's future is hinged on which she chooses. It follows a lot of the same rules that books in this category often do. A Beautiful Dark is, at it's core, an angel book. Their existence makes Skye's story so much more intriguing.Īs I mentioned above, the story line tends to fall into a pattern that ends up a little easy to anticipate at times. The tension that exists between these two crackles off the pages. Devin and Asher are like night and day, but this works very well for the story. One cocky and charismatic and the other stoic and at peace. If that wasn't enough, Joceyln Davies offers up two very different boys for the reader to choose between. It just so happens that she has an extraordinary side to her as well. It was honestly hard not to appreciate Skye, even when I felt a little bit frustrated by her choices (or lack thereof). She is funny, smart, sweet, and a loyal friend. ![]() The reader is treated to a view of Skye's entire life, including her tough past and her bright present with her friends. Nothing too heavy, nothing mind blowing, but a sweeping and enjoyable read nonetheless. ![]() Books like this may or may not knock my socks off, but they'll keep me reading on and on until I'm finished. ![]() So easy and delicious to devour, that it might just be a sin. What’s more, the reluctance to make changes is understandable. But translating this lesson to the current education norms in which standardization plays a huge part is, admits Rose, easier said than done. In allowing themselves to pursue what motivates them personally, they are able to reach high levels of success in their chosen fields. What all "dark horses" have in common is not training nor personality, says Rose, but instead a sense that their fulfillment it what matters most. ![]() “Maybe there’s something we can learn from them.” “There’s all these people who are successful that no one sees coming,” he says, referring to those who follow less traditional paths on their way to personal success. There is not one tried and true path to success, says Lecturer Todd Rose, but how can we find our own way - and help our children and students do the same? The answer, says Rose, may lie with the Dark Horses. ![]() ![]() “Crippled things are always more beautiful. The longer you look at the cover, the more details you see!
